More responsibilities for landlords

The Department for Communities and Local Government (“DCLG”) is planning to place even more responsibilities on landlords of residential property. DCLG want to bring in new measures requiring landlords to carry out checks on the immigration status of their tenants before offering a tenancy to them. DCLG also want to bring in a new criminal offence for rogue landlords and agents who repeatedly fail to carry out these checks or fail to have illegal immigrants evicted from their properties. Another proposal is to blacklist these types of landlords and letting agents.

On the plus side DCLG are also putting provisions in the Immigration Bill to allow landlords to more easily evict illegal immigrants by allowing the landlord to end the tenancy when the tenant’s legal right to stay in this country comes to an end.
